The Last Cuentista: The Lifesaving Art of Storytelling

“Habia una vez,” . . . in a galaxy far far away, Petra Peña awakens after humanity’s last chance of survival has been launched into space by the Pleiades Corp to find she is the only survivor with memories of Earth. In The Last Cuentista, author Donna Barba Higuera builds a world which relies upon the artistry and magic of storytelling. Her storytelling weaves elements of traditional Mexican folklore, the magical realism of Paulo Coehlo, alongside the sci-fi/dystopian elements of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and Ursula Le Guin’s speculative fiction into more than a novel. She “rings the alarm bell,” stirring readers awake and away from the all-consuming screens of these modern times. Higuera forces her readers to confront what it means to be a human – flawed yet hopeful, and constantly struggling to survive in spite of the chaos that exists in the cosmos. By the end of the novel, her readers will undoubtedly question: Do stories possess a lifesaving power? If they do, how do we wield this power for humanity instead of against it?

In a not so distant future, after the “great pandemic of the ’20s,” we are thrust out into space with Petra after she and her family are selected to be among the last survivors of Earth’s impending collision with the nagual, or “fire snake,” that is Halley’s Comet. The family must make a huge sacrifice and leave everything and everyone they know and love behind, including their beloved “Lita” – their abuelita, a magnificent storyteller. Lita is the kind of cuentista Petra aspires to be despite her family’s insistence that she study the sciences. Because of her family’s special set of skills, they will help establish a human colony after their arrival on their new planet. Higuera’s character development and depiction of Petra’s Mexican American family is multifaceted and spans many generations. These characters believe their past mistakes and struggles should not be swept under the rug and hidden from each other. However painful their truths might be, it emboldens them to tackle the future’s uncertainties. In fact, through the retelling of traditional Mexican cuentos (fans of the genre will surely recognize) mixed with their own family history, Higuera creates transparency between the Peñas and the reader. Higuera’s warning for modern society rings thusly: if humanity conceals the mistakes of its past, it will be doomed to either repeat them or create far worse scenarios than one can imagine for future generations. 

When Petra comes out of stasis almost 400 years later and realizes her memories and cuentos are the last ones of Earth, despite the “Monitors” efforts to erase them, she uses this glitch to her advantage. The Monitors, who were supposed to assure the safe passage of humanity’s last colony, have become “The Collective.” They determine humanity’s mistakes, including the memories of their past lives and selves, must be erased as this new planet provides an opportunity to start with a clean slate – no greed, no war, and no desires. Only logic and selflessness will be their dominant characteristics. However, Petra soon learns The Collective will do anything necessary to protect this genetically modified “Utopian” society. Through the use of technology, emotion stabilizing pharmaceuticals, and murder of the egocentric self, Higuera’s formidable foil and foe, the Chancellor Nyla, reigns like a queen bee over this hive of new homo sapiens. They wield absolute power and destroy all differences, conflicts, and instability. None of Higuera’s sinister portrayals of technological or pharmaceutical advances sound far-fetched, especially when put on a 400-year spanned timeline. Her novel, released after a year which saw unprecedented gains in the news headlines (especially in Big Tech and Big Pharma) by CEOS “making as much as 351 times what the average worker now makes” clearly illustrates dangerous predictions about the marriage of these industries with centralized power.  It’s just a novel, right? Nevertheless, readers will immediately begin to see eerie correlations between Elon Musk’s Neuralink Interface, the pharmaceutical industry’s stronghold on mental and emotional health, and the media’s dogmatic propaganda, with The Collective’s Cogs, Tonics, and Holographic Multi-messaging. This story is utterly captivating and full of depth. 

While readers dwell for a spell in the darkness of this dystopian nightmare, they will also experience the beauty of a new home for humanity. A not quite “Goldilocks planet” with purple, pink, and orange skies awaits. Sparkling gorgeous lakes canopied with floating water butterflies, chinchilla-like animals scurrying with winged lizards on the water’s edge, and edible water vines and plants are just beyond The Collective’s prison ship. Higuera’s creation, the planet Sagan, becomes the paradise, the jewel awaiting the mighty hero if she can exercise self sovereignty over her mind and cuentos while simultaneously trying to hide her knowledge from The Collective and awaken the few remaining “Relic” children with the magic of her storytelling. With each cuento, they are all closer to freedom and a new home.

With The Last Cuentista, Higuera takes her place alongside the great minds of dystopian literature like Orwell, Huxley, Bradbury – and most recently – Roth, and Collins. She uses this platform to resound a dire warning against dogma, the dangers of new world orders and authoritarian rulers, centralized power over conflict, the illusion of peace and safety, mind/emotion numbing pharmaceuticals, and the use of brain altering technology in the hands of the wicked. “Not all cuentos have happy endings,” Higuera reminds us through her characters.  Some cuentos are downright terrifying, but by the end of this cuento, Higuera will have her readers believing in the mystifying and healing powers of storytelling. Who knows what the future holds for humanity? Maybe someday the stories you carry could save your life or the lives of others.

La última cuentista: el arte de salvar vidas contando historias

“Había una vez”, … en una galaxia muy lejana, Petra Peña despierta después de que la última oportunidad de supervivencia de la humanidad haya sido lanzada al espacio por el Cuerpo de las Pléyades para descubrir que es la única sobreviviente con recuerdos de la Tierra. En “La último cuentista”, la autora Donna Barba Higuera construye un mundo basado en el arte y la magia de la narración. Su narración entrelaza elementos del folclor tradicional mexicano, el realismo mágico de Paulo Coehlo junto con los elementos distópicos y de ciencia ficción de la obra Feliz mundo nuevo por Aldous Huxley y la ficción especulativa de Ursula Le Guin creando más que una novela. Ella “hace sonar la alarma”, despertando y desconectando a los lectores de la tecnología de los tiempos modernos.  Higuera obliga a sus lectores a confrontar lo que significa ser un ser humano con defectos pero esperanzado, luchando constantemente por sobrevivir a pesar del caos que existe en el cosmos. Al final de la novela, sin duda, sus lectores se preguntarán: ¿Las historias poseen un poder para salvar vidas? Y si lo hacen, ¿cómo ejercemos ese poder en favor de la humanidad en lugar de contra ella?

En un futuro no muy lejano, después de la “gran pandemia de los años 20”, somos empujados al espacio con Petra después de que ella y su familia son seleccionados como partelos últimos sobrevivientes de la inminente colisión de la Tierra con el nagual, o “serpiente de fuego”, que es el Cometa Halley. La familia debe hacer el gran sacrificio de dejar atrás todo y a todos los que conocen y aman incluida su amada “Lita”, su abuelita y magnífica narradora. Lita es el tipo de cuentista que Petra aspira a ser, a pesar de que su familia insiste en que estudie Ciencias. Debido al conjunto de habilidades especiales que su familia posee, ayudarán a establecer una colonia humana después de su llegada al nuevo planeta. El desarrollo del personaje de Higuera y la representación de la familia mexico-americana de Petra es multifacético y abarca muchas generaciones. Estos personajes creen que sus errores y luchas del pasado no deben ser barridos bajo la alfombra ni  ocultos el uno del otro. Por muy dolorosas que puedan ser sus verdades, les anima a abordar las incertidumbres del futuro. De hecho, a través del recuento de cuentos tradicionales mexicanos (los fanáticos del género seguramente reconocerán) mezclados con su propia historia familiar, Higuera crea transparencia entre las Peñas y el lector. La advertencia de Higuera para la sociedad moderna suena así: si la humanidad oculta los errores de su pasado, estará condenada a repetirlos o a crear escenarios mucho peores de lo que uno pueda imaginar para las generaciones futuras.

Cuando Petra sale de la estasis casi 400 años después y se da cuenta de que sus recuerdos y cuentos son los últimos de la Tierra, a pesar de los esfuerzos de los “Monitores” para borrarlos, usa ese error a su favor. Los Monitores, quienes debían asegurar que la travesía de la última colonia de la humanidad sea segura, se han convertido en ” El Colectivo.” Ellos determinan los errores de la humanidad, y los recuerdos de sus vidas pasadas deben borrarse ya que este nuevo planeta brinda la oportunidad de comenzar de nuevo — sin codicia, sin guerra, ni deseos. Solo la lógica y el desinterés serán sus características dominantes. Sin embargo, Petra pronto se entera de que El Colectivo hará todo lo necesario para proteger esta sociedad “utópica” que ha sido genéticamente modificada. A través de la tecnología, los fármacos estabilizadores de emociones , y el asesinato del ‘yo’ egocéntrico, la terrible enemiga de Higuera, la Canciller Nyla, gobierna como abeja reina la colmena de nuevos homo sapiens. Ejercen poder absoluto y eliminan cualquier diferencia, conflicto o inestabilidad. Ninguna de las representaciones siniestras de los avances tecnológicos o farmacéuticos de Higuera suena inverosímil, especialmente tomando en cuenta que la línea del tiempo es de 400 años. Su novela, publicada después de un año que vio ganancias sin precedentes en los titulares de las noticias (especialmente en las industrias de gran tecnología y farmacéutica) por parte de los directores generales “que ganan hasta 351 veces lo que el trabajador promedio ahora hace”, ilustra claramente las predicciones peligrosas sobre el matrimonio de estas industrias con el poder centralizado. Es sólo una novela, ¿cierto? Sin embargo, los lectores comenzarán inmediatamente a ver correlaciones espeluznantes entre la interfaz Neural Link de Elon Musk, la fortaleza que protege a la industria farmacéutica de salud mental y emocional, y la propaganda dogmática de los medios, con los Engranajes, Tónicos y Mensajes Múltiples Holográficos del Colectivo. Esta historia es absolutamente cautivadora y llena de profundidad.

Mientras los lectores vagan por un hechizo en la oscuridad de esta pesadilla distópica, también experimentarán la belleza de un nuevo hogar para la humanidad. Un planeta no todo “Ricitos de Oro” con cielos morados, rosados y anaranjados te espera. Lagos brillantes magníficos con toldo de mariposas flotantes de agua, animales como chinchillas corriendo con lagartos alados en el borde del agua, y vides y plantas comestibles de agua quedan fuera del barco prisión del Colectivo. La creación de Higuera, el planeta Sagan, se convierte en el paraíso, la joya que espera al poderoso héroe si puede ejercer su soberanía sobre su mente y cuentos al mismo tiempo que intenta ocultar su sabiduría del Colectivo y despertar a los pocos niños “Relic” restantes con la magia de su narración. Con cada cuento, todos están más cerca de la libertad y un nuevo hogar.

Con La última cuentista, Higuera toma su lugar junto a las grandes mentes de la literatura distópica como Orwell, Huxley, Bradbury – y más recientemente – Roth, y Collins. Ella utiliza esta plataforma para resonar una advertencia grave contra el dogma, los peligros de los nuevos órdenes mundiales y los gobernantes autoritarios, el poder centralizado sobre el conflicto, la ilusión de paz y seguridad, la mente/emoción adormecer productos farmacéuticos, y el uso de la tecnología que altera el cerebro en manos de los malvados. “No todos los cuentos tienen finales felices”, nos recuerda Higuera a través de sus personajes. Algunos cuentos son francamente aterradores, pero al final de este cuento, Higuera hará que sus lectores crean en los poderes mistificadores y curativos de narración. ¿Quién sabe lo que le depara el futuro a la humanidad? Tal vez algún día las historias que llevas podrían salvar tu vida o la vida de otros.
