Asa Johnson is a poetry student in the MFA program at Texas State University. He grew up in the East Texas Piney Woods and has been missing the sound of woodpeckers since he moved to Austin seven years ago.

What he’s looking for in poetry submissions: What catches his eye are poems that use the musicality of language to amplify sensual (rather than abstract) experience, as well as poems that demonstrate new, uncommon, and/or socio-politically exigent perspectives of lived experience.

Writers he admires: Allen Ginsberg, Anne Carson, James Merrill, Terrance Hayes, and T. S. Eliot.
